Exclusion is the part of rodent control that most one-time treatments skip, and it is the part that actually keeps rodents out. Trapping clears the rats and mice inside today, but if the gaps they used are still open, new rodents move in within weeks. Exclusion means finding every entry point on the home and sealing it with materials rodents cannot chew through, so the fix holds long after the traps come out.
What exclusion actually means
Exclusion is the process of rodent-proofing the building itself. Instead of only reacting to the rodents inside, we close the openings that let them in. Rats can use a gap the size of a quarter and mice a gap the size of a dime, so exclusion is detailed work: it means checking the whole exterior and the vulnerable interior spots, not just the one hole you happened to notice.
On a typical Los Angeles home the entry points cluster in predictable places. The roofline and eaves, attic and dryer vents, the gaps where plumbing and electrical lines pass through walls, the garage door seal, and openings into the crawlspace are all common.
